Evenings

Nights are cold on the Great Plains in winter so we mostly stayed in. Becky was poking around in the basement (all Kansas dwellings have basements) one such evening and came up with her and Daniel's old accordions. Both had taken some lessons in their youth.

They blew the dust from them, undid the bellows and next thing you know...a party's goin' on!!!

I close my eyes and suddenly I'm transported to New Orleans and cajun zydeco music fills my ears! In reality, neither have played in some time. Daniel is working on some kind of deeply ingrained body memory thing and Becky can only remember "The Ballad of the Green Beret."

Note from Becky: do not assume this choice of song means I embraced the whole John Wayne war thing. Believe it or not, this song was - back in 1969 or so when it came out on the radio - the "hippest" piece of sheet music my weird instructor had. So I learned it. More or less.

..Gil tries to supress giggles about TBOTGB ever being "hip."

"The Ballad of the Green Beret" it is then! With Gusto!

"Oh, fighting soldiers from the sky! Fearless men who jump and die!"...la-la-la.

A great evening! And to top it all off we got our next album cover shot from it...
